Memorial day 2019! It is so easy to pick out an outfit for any American holiday if see what’s in my closet. Blue is the overwhelmingly dominant color, followed by white (and black), and then red.
I was picking up a dress in a shop the other day, and the shop owner asked if I were Chinese. The curiosity caught me off-guard initially, so I asked why, she smiled and said: “because you picked a red dress, and red is a lucky color for Chinese.” It made total sense! Are my Chinese roots so apparent by the colors I chose? Then what about the blues and the whites, when did the color blue become my first choice?
It made me think about my journey becoming a Chinese American – the sweat, and the reward of working hard and dreaming big. It made me think about the people I met here who welcomed me, mentored me, showered me with kindness. Over time, America has become my permanent home and maybe unconsciously, the color of my choice reflected that as well.
