My son hates long car rides, ever since he was a baby.
At the dinner table today, we discussed a ski trip to Mammoth Mountain, even though he loves skiing, he immediately protested the idea.
“It takes soooo long!” he exclaimed, “it takes like, three hours!”
“It’s actually five hours, and seven if we need a break…” my husband corrected him.
“What?! 7 hours? that’s 2 plus 2 plus 2 plus 1 hour!” his math skill is impressive, I thought, and he knows how to use it to make a strong point.
“I understand it may seem long; perhaps you can take a nap and eat some snacks and watch some movies while we drive?” I added.
“No, SEVEN hours is too long, I can only do one hour, maybe two.”
” Well, how come you were super happy flying 11 hours to London last summer? You had a good time on the flight. “
“Mommy…” now my son looked at me as if I were an idiot, he clearly felt insulted with the question since he loves airplanes.
“we were flying in an airplane, okay? and AIRPLANES TRAVEL FASTER THAN CARS!”
LOL.
It is almost too cruel to correct him sometimes since a child’s mind is so innocent and adorable. On the other hand, he did point out something strikingly accurate – we tend to value time differently based on our experience. Sometimes a painful second feels like an eternity, and sometimes a good time just flies by without you realize it.
Since we have decided to go to Mammoth for another ski trip, I’ve determined to make this car ride fun for him so 7 hours won’t seem that dreadful.
Fellow parents, any suggestions?
